An Outsourcing Nightmare Turns Into A Public Apology

Friday, 12 February 2010 16:34 Last Updated on Monday, 22 February 2010 16:57 Written by Mike 4 Comments

Hello everyone, it has been a little while since I wrote anything here and I will explain that in a later post. But there is something that I must publicly apologize for.

As I will explain in a post later, I have been creating some software for a very cool piece of marketing software and when it came time to get the web site created I did what I normally do, I outsourced it.

And I have had some bad experience with outsourcing before but generally it is a good experience. But I have never had an experience like this. I hired an outsourcer, one that I have used in the past to create the sales pages and landing page for these new products. When I got them back I put them up and other than having my wife spell check them did not do much with them.

I did not like the design of the landing page so I did re-do that page and set everything off to be sold. I cannot remember if it was the first day or the second day that the site was up and products were being sold but I got a call from another addon developer and he told me that I had stolen his site design. After looking at his and mine, he was right! My web designer had basically taken his page, put in my product information and changed a few colors.

Wow, that was embarrassing! It is a very humbling experience to have something like that happen to you especially on the heels of the release of the products. That very same night I replaced all of the pages with a new design that I know was not stolen because I created it myself. The new design matched the new landing page that I designed and I honestly like the new design better than what the web designer had stolen.

So I must publicly apologize to William (Bill) Ortel. He is the owner of the site that the design was taken from. I am sorry for intruding in your space. An I also must say this, Bill was very cool about the whole thing. He had every right to jump all over me about it and did not.

Lesson learned…. When you get comfortable with an outsourcer, that is the time to REALLY check up on them.

I am still a big believer in outsourcing although for a few days I had back in my head it is just better to do it myself. I have gotten over that now though and back on the path of the e-myth.

Hey Mike,
This so ironic, I KNOW BILL OERTEL!
Damn.. he used to run one of my tower sites in Wisconsin, he’s a buddy of mine. LOL what a small world.
