Step by Step Hackintosh
Filed under: Just for Fun, Technology; Tagged as: Apple OSX, hackintosh, Mac OSX, macintosh, Snow Leopard2 CommentsA while back I got on this micro-continuity kick and reserved a bunch of step-by-step-something domains. I have gotten a few online already but still have a few more to go. The next one I am very excited about and it is coming together now. After the end of the month when the current site I am working on is finally 100% live (25th is the official live date) and the kinks are worked out, we are going to start taping this new micro-C video series on how to install Mac OSX on PC hardware. These devices are lovingly called Hackintosh’s.
We are going to walk step by step and show you how to put Mac OSX on a MSI netbook and a custom built machine with PC hardware. The PC hardware is going to have 8 GB of Ram, a single Quad core CPU, 750GB of hard drive space and the standard video card. All the hardware costs less than $350. We are also going to load Mac OSX Snow Leopard Server on the PC hardware. This is the final configuration we are looking for. We will probably add another quad core CPU to it too. We are going to start using a Snow Leopard Server within our network and this is a great entry method to see if it can do everything we need.
So we have the hardware and are eager to get started. I am getting really excited because I get to get back into the old hacker inside of me. Granted this is not a difficult hack, but I have been away from it for a while doing business development and marketing consulting for a while, so any computer fun is fun
I was asked by a friend if this was illegal. I am not a lawyer, but because we are going to be purchasing a full blown OSX install package and not stealing one from somewhere online we are not stealing anything. So from that point of view we are legal. I am sure there is some potential licensing issues with installing OSX on non apple hardware. So we will be sure to make sure everyone knows you do it at your own risk.
There is a ton of documentation all over the internet on how to do this, but unless you are at least an ok hacker, it can be difficult to follow the instructions. Our goal is to make it step-by-step simple so that just about anyone can do it. Not sure I can make it simple enough for my mother to be able to do it, but that is the goal. And no, she is not challenged, she is just new to computers, but is learning really fast.
I will update the blog when we get rollin with it.
